Backpacking to Laguna Cochor. Villarrica National Reserve Araucanía region, Chile March 2025 Trailhead: Ruta S-965 access - Reigolil Itinerary: Cochor-Sollipulli South Ridge trail from Ruta S-965 access - Reigolil trailhead. Trip section stats: Approx. 5 mi, approx. 1500 ft elevation gain. AllTrail map: https://www.alltrails.com/explore/rec... Notes about the map: the map is indicative of the trip itinerary although mileage and moving time cannot be considered as reference as I often deviated from the route for filming and photography; also the moving time on the map includes all stops and breaks during the day as I stop recording only once camp was setup for each day. Hiking Notes: Laguna Cochor is a small lake with a big landscape punch. A small lake bowl on the back side of a ridge in the middle of an Araucaria forest (mainly Araucaria trees). Its backdrop, above the tree line, is the Southern ridge of Nevados de Sollipulli, a.k.a. Sollipulli Volcano, with its impressive and large glaciated crater. The vast majority of hikers who visit the Sollipulli Volcano access its rim from the trails on the North side, within the Nevados de Sollipulli National Park. I decided to hike the Sollipulli South ridge instead as I could combine the hike with a backpacking trip to Laguna Cochor. I spent two nights at the laguna in peaceful solitude. Despite its small size, Laguna Cochor is very scenic. The surrounding forest is amazing, the Sollipulli South ridge is also a beautiful backdrop. Both sunsets and sunrises were spectacular, particularly with the partially cloudy sky and the fast moving clouds. The constantly changing light on the tree line and the lake reflections with the Araucaria dead logs on the beach and in the water enhanced the visual appearance and made both evenings and mornings very enjoyable.
