Today on february 3, 2026, I completed my recording of the complete 48 Tonadas by Joaquín Nin-Culmell (1908-2004), a project that has kept me occupied for six weeks. These Tonadas were written between 1957 and 1961 and are based on popular songs and dances from all over the Iberian peninsula, including the islands of Gran Canaria and the Baleares. It is a real treasure trove of beautiful and catchy tunes set in a great variety of styles, displaying great depth as well as much cheeky humor. I dedicate this video to Marcel Worms, the enterprising Dutch pianist who was the first non-Spanish pianist (as far as I know) to record these pieces, having studied them with Maria Luisa Cantos who herself studied them with the composer.
