What is Rosin from Cannabis Professor DeBacco Description of Method of Making Rosin 1. Desired material is broken down into roughly 0.2-0.5 gram increments and placed in a rectangular shape inside a filtering mesh. 2. Material inside of mesh filter is placed in between two sheets of parchment paper and the rosin press is preheated to desired temperature (typically increased up to 250F or 122C) Description of Method of Making Rosin 3. The mesh with the material is placed in the preheated rosin press, and a constant pressure is applied. Within 1-5 minutes the rosin will have been extracted from the mesh bag and should be flowing down the parchment paper. 4. Pressure is released and the resulting rosin extract is cooled to allow it to solidify. Resulting End Product = Rosin The resulting product of a rosin press is rosin, a solventless extract that can contain upwards of 80% THC and holds many of the terpenes from the original plant material. Advantages of Rosin This method is completely solventless, making rosin one of the purest concentrates available. Relatively simple and easy process with minimal specialized equipment required. Cost-effective when compared to other extraction methods. Rosin presses are not limited to commercial operations. Disadvantages of Rosin High pressure rosin presses can be extremely dangerous if misused It is easy to burn the extract if not properly pressed Professional Grade rosin equipment can become costly however it is still much cheaper than a standard closed-loop system Live Rosin vs Live Resin Do not confuse these two end products Live Rosin = considered to be a solventless extract that maintains the chemical profile of the plant, with out the risk of potentially hazardous chemicals. Live Resin = solvent-based extract, usually butane hash oil, that is made with live or freshly frozen plant material and the process is a single-pass extraction is used to capture the plant's terpene and cannabinoid profile by processing the resin glands before the plant is dried and cured.
