Total Solid ,Total suspended solids (TSS) & Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in Membrane- Desalination

SWRO Plant Training Series Membrane-based Desalination Technology Total Solid ,Total suspended solids (TSS) & Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in Membrane- Desalination What is Total Solid ? What is Total suspended solids (TSS) ? What is Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) ? What is relationship between TS,TSS and TDS ? How does total dissolved solids (TDS) affect water quality of RO system ? Why Measure Total Suspended Solids is important ? Total Solids - Total solids present in the water is equal to the total suspended solids plus total dissolved solids, This includes dissolved salts such as sodium chloride, NaCl, and solid particles such as silt and plankton. Total Solids = Total Suspended Solids (TSS) + Total Dissolved Solids(TDS) Effects of High Total Solids • Can be harmful to aquatic organisms • Reduce water clarity • Aesthetically unpleasing • Decrease photosynthetic rate • Increase water temperature How does total dissolved solids (TDS) affect water quality of RO system ? The total dissolved solids (TDS) concentration affects both the system flux and the salt rejection of an RO system As feed TDS increases, the driving force for water decreases (under constant applied pressure), due to the increase in osmotic pressure of the feed. results in a decrease in system flux. As the driving force for water decreases, the amount of water passing through the membrane relative to the amount of salt passing through the membrane decreases, resulting in a higher TDS concentration in the permeate
