The Nanda dynasty, known as the fifth ruling dynasty of Magadha, was established around 345 BCE and lasted until approximately 322 BCE1. The Nandas are particularly noted for their wealth, which was likely a result of the introduction of new currency and taxation systems. However, they were also unpopular among their subjects due to their low status birth, excessive taxation, and general misconduct1. The military strength of the Nanda Empire was formidable, with estimates during Alexander the Great’s period suggesting an army consisting of 20,000 cavalry, 200,000 infantry, 2,000 chariots, and 3,000 elephants. This immense military power was one of the reasons Alexander’s soldiers mutinied, ending his campaign in India. The last Nanda king, Dhana Nanda, was overthrown by Chandragupta Maurya, who founded the Maurya Empire.
