Too Much Protein? Dr Rutledge Suggests: Practice of Many Bariatric Surgeons is Wrong (Again!) 23 Years ago (1997) Dr Rutledge began his fight to suggest the new MGB operation might be a better way to surgically treat obesity and diabetes. Many American Surgeons fought Dr Rutledge saying the operation was bad and would not cause weight loss. The world has now spoken. They were (are) wrong. Dr Rutledge was Right! Now 23 years later Dr Rutledge may have discovered something new, again. ;-) Question: Is the High/Very High Protein diet Suggested by Many Bariatric Surgeons and Nutritionists the “BEST” choice? Maybe not? Warning, Warning, Warning: Follow your Drs Orders. Do not change you diet because of anything I say here! You need your Dr and his team to provide and over see your care. You cannot watch a Youtube video and treat yourself. But, you can ask questions. Here are the questions: 1. All around the world many bariatric surgeons and nutritionists are prescribing and even threatening patients (quote: "Your Surgery May Be Cancelled.) if they do not follow a high/very high protein diet, many with the recommendation/demand that patients take cups and cups of daily protein powders. 2. There is some very good short term research that such High/Very High Protein diets with the protein powders can be helpful in the short term…But There are some other “truths” that is research that raises questions about the High/VERY High protein diets…. 1. What is the ‘Normal’ amount of daily protein that is “Best” for Long term Health and wellness? Answer: NOT a HIGH/VERY HIGH Protein Diet! The daily intake of protein in the USA and around the world has gone UP every year since 1900(!) along with the obesity rates. 2. Hundreds of Research Articles: High Protein Diets over the long term increase Fatty Liver, Obesity, Diabetes, Heart Attack, Stroke, Cancer and Death (Really? Really!) Google it, or ask your Dr.? 3.The Number 1 cause of Bariatric surgery complications after Weight Loss Surgery is Weight REGAIN (SEE Lap Band, Sleeve, etc.) and "Long Term" studies of High/Very High protein diets show they INCREASE the risk of weight gain and… (see above.) 4. Numerous studies show low/moderate protein diets LENGTHEN LIFESPAN and High/Very High protein diets appear to shorten life span. 5.
