1994 was an extraordinary time in the evolution (or should I say revolution) of communications digital technology and I was lucky to be a filmmaker assigned to work with companies in the Valley. Silicon Valley was booming with startups and new ideas. This film was designed to provoke what was called at the time early adopters – mobile professionals. They were already technology geeks and the very successful (at least initially) Silicon Valley startup, General Magic, was creating the first personal communicators – way before the iPhone. This video shows people using the new Sony Magiclink communicator designed and built by General Magic. The video includes early adopters like Steve Wozniak (Woz), Steve Jobs partner in the founding of Apple and tech analyst Mitch Radcliffe. The video presents other "new" technologies like to wait pagers being developed to send text messages. Apple was one of the early Magic partners and secretly built its own personal communicator called the Newton shortly after General Magic released its technology built by Sony and Motorola and Phillips. Wall Street was thrilled and CEOs of major partnering communications companies like Philips, Panasonic, Sony, Motorola and AT&T felt this was the dawn of a new age. They were right about that but they were wrong about their investment in General Magic technology. While General Magic failed, the concept of carrying mobile communications phone technology with you became huge, largely due to the efforts of Steve Jobs and Apple. That is important because two of the founders of General Magic, Bill Atkinson and Andy Herzfeld, regularly connected with Jobs who watched what Magic was doing and then released Apple's first smart phone built by Tony Fadell who was one of the creative General Magic employees (called Magicians). Tony went on to build the iPhone, the iPad, Nest and much more. if you found this clip of interest, search the words "General Magic" on my YouTube channel and you will find a variety of videos I made at this time.
