The Teck Emergency Centre at St. Paul’s Hospital delivers fast, compassionate care to over 100,000 patients each year. Backed by leading-edge research and a new state-of-the-art facility, this team is redefining emergency medicine in British Columbia. When patients arrive at the Teck Emergency Centre, they are often facing one of the most stressful moments of their lives. The team at St. Paul’s Hospital is committed to meeting them with compassion, clarity, and care. But behind the scenes, something even more powerful is happening: a seamless integration of clinical care and research that is redefining emergency medicine in British Columbia. This is one of the first emergency departments in Canada to embed research directly into daily practice. Clinicians ask critical questions—Why do we do things this way? Can we do it better?—and use evidence to improve care in real time. One such initiative helped safely discharge 25% of chest pain patients with confidence, reducing crowding and improving satisfaction for both patients and physicians. The new Teck Emergency Centre at the Jim Pattison Medical Campus will feature three “mini-emerges” within one larger department, allowing care to be wrapped around the patient. With bedside registration, private rooms, and streamlined diagnostics, patients will receive faster, more personalized care. Co-located with a new Clinical Support and Research Centre, this facility will empower clinicians to continue innovating—because better care starts with better questions.
