Here's the link to the full game, • 1991: Yankees @ Angels (Chuck Finley pitch... Eye black. White-guy stash. Tom Brookens rocked the same look, as did Lance Parrish. But c'mon. You know as well as I do that it is Donnie Baseball that is the epitome of that era of ball. Even with the Yanks trailing the Jays significantly in the '91 season standings, even with 'Big Stein' cooling his heels thanks to a commish with stones and the richman's incredibly bad decision to play footsies with shady PIs, it is the lefty with well documented back probs that takes us back to that place in time. I had just graduated from high school that summer, almost thirty-one years ago. I was working like a good little Dago in the stone and concrete trade. And as I had the previous two baseball seasons before, I had a serious hate-on for those 'big money' Jays atop the AL East. With Jesse Barfield traded to the Yankees in '89, and with him my fanhood as loyal fan went Big Apple, I could not help but give in to the media that lavished affection on the Yankee Captain. I'm sure the tragic quality of Donnie's ailment and the way it stole his ability to drive the ball, as he had done from '84 to '87, added to the lore and myth that layered around his legacy. Whatever role sympathy played, the Yanks' first-baseman become the stuff of legend in my mind as well. With that reputation and all the kind words said about the man during countless game-of-the-week broadcasts, that stash and eye black, not to mention his pretty swing from the graceful side of the plate, is the signature. Authentically 80s. Authentically pinstripes. Pure Americana...if you weren't overly jealous of the most important franchise in the game, that is. For as much complaining as there was about the way that CBS handled baseball when they had the national broadcast rights, you just can't go wrong with Dick Stockton and Jim Kaat in the booth. Are they Costas, Kubek, Vin and Garagiola, Michaels, Jackson, or Howard Cosell? No, of course not. But they did a lovely job with this nothing-game between two 'going nowhere' teams. And they paid hommage to the Captain just like the rest had. The legend just kept growing. #DonMattingly #Mattingly #DonnieBaseball #Yankees #NewYork #baseball #legend
