NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED - (Gone 5135) Out of Los Angeles, this one shot single for Sherrell Townsend on the Gone label was released in September of 1962. The structure of Jack Nitzsche's atmospheric arrangement is similar to those that he crafted for The Crystal's controversial 1962 Philles single, 'He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss) and Bobby Darin's 1963 Capitol release, 'Not For Me'. 'She/He Thinks I Still Care' was written by Dickey Lee Lipscomb and was recorded by many different artists. This version is one of the more unique productions with a sparse but effective music track and distant background vocals by The Blossoms. Miss Townsend's vocal delivery is amazingly similar to that of England's Helen Shapiro. Sherrell had issued a single on Lute records and reissued months later on Little Star entitled, 'Summer Days' / 'I Love You'. In January of 1964 she could be heard singing lead on a release credited to Ronnie and The Crayons entitled, 'Am I In Love'. The producers must have thought the song still had alot more mileage since an alternate and earlier version of 'Am I In Love' was issued in November 1964 on the minuscule Kerwood label and credited to Ronnie and The Parleys. Throughout the 1960's and on into the 1990's, Miss Townsend, who was then known as Sherrell Atwood, maintained a lucrative living singing background vocals alongside that of Clydie King, Merry Clayton, Gloria Jones, Edna Wright, and Carolyn Willis to name a few. She was a member of the short lived group, FOXY, for the two singles issued on the Double Shot label. Sherrell Townsend Atwood continued to record and perform until her untimely passing in 2006.
