In this video I´ll explain how you become an airline captain!!! Now let´s imagine you´ve been flying for an airline for quite some time , you´ve gained 4000 - 5000 flying hours over the past 7 - 8 years. You´ve not only profited from your flight experience, you´ve also gained seniority over the years which is a crucial part in becoming a captain. Now your airline makes an announcement for a so called „Captains upgrading“. There can be many reasons why the airline is in need of new captains, older captains might have retired or left the company for other reasons, or the company is an overall growth, more planes need more pilots. So you apply for the captains upgrade if you´re one of the copilots with a higher seniority. Sooner or later the department of flight training will set you up for the PICUS program. Pilot in command under supervision program. Meaning you as a copilot act as captain from the right hand seat. You´ll be the pilot in command, full filling captain duties, like passengers announcements, dealing with situations with ground handling, taxiing to the runway and much more. The amount of PICUS hours vary for many different reasons, for example in which country you´re flying, flight regulation authorities, aircraft type, previous gained hours etc.
