The powerful south-easterly wind, a familiar force from spring to late summer, swept across the city in full voice. Locally known as the Cape Doctor, this dry, often relentless wind has long been believed to “cleanse” Cape Town, clearing away air pollution, dispersing pests, and, as folklore has it, blowing out bad omens. While it can test tempers, turn umbrellas inside out, and send sunbathers scrambling for shelter, many Capetonians see it as an essential part of the city’s seasonal rhythm.
