A strenuous 8.2-mile (roundtrip) climb with more than 3,000 feet of elevation gain ending with sweeping views of the immense Harding Ice Field (elevation 3,512') in Kenai Fjords National Park. Be prepared for anything on this hike. Bring extra clothing and rain gear, sunglasses (especially if you have to travel over any snow), at least two liters of water per person and because this is Alaska, insect repellant. It’s also not a bad idea to hike in boots as opposed to lighter footwear. It’s a rocky, sometimes muddy/snowy trail. Oh, yeah, bring bear spray. Directions: Tap into your map app, “Harding Ice Field Trail.” Parking is free and there’s no entrance fee for the park. From the parking lot, walk towards the Exit Glacier Nature Center. Just to the left of the Nature Center you will see a wide trail called the Glacier View Loop Trail. Follow this trail straight out. The trail will actually turn into the Glacier Overlook Trail just before you reach the Harding Icefield Trailhead. There is a posted sign for the Harding Icefield Trail. You’ll reach the Harding Icefield Trail at about 0.3 miles into the hike.
