I learned this song from a recording of Anna Roberts-Gevalt who learned it from George Gibson of eastern KY. It is about a mine disaster that occurred in May 1902 near the town of Fraterville, TN. A devastating explosion killed over two hundred workers. A handful of men survived the initial blast, but were trapped underground and suffocated a few hours later. Before they died, they wrote farewell messages to their families. This song is based on those letters. LYRICS What hills, what hills, my true love that burn with the fires of hell? They are the hills of Coal Creek, where miners work and dwell. I worked in the mine on Tuesday; I worked the day before. At seven o'clock on Wednesday, I'll work in the mine no more. I boarded a train Wednesday morning and into the mine did go. At seven o'clock in the morning, I heard that awful blow. Shut up in the mines at Coal Creek, we know that we must die; but if we trust in Jesus, to Heaven our souls will fly. Farewell, father and mother. Farewell, my wife and child. Shut up in the mines at Coal Creek, we know that we must die. The birds are sweetly singing; the sun is shining bright-- but where we are this morning, the sky is black as night.
