Did you know that the presence of EU institutions in Brussels contributes around 25% of regional turnover and around 20% of employment in the Brussels-Capital Region? This includes the Council of the European Union, currently chaired by Belgium. In our latest video, we focus on the impact of the EU on the world, including California. Opened in September 2022, the EU office in San Francisco is an integral part of the EU Delegation to the United States. The European Union Office in San Francisco is known as the EU Delegation to the United States, with one of its branches located in San Francisco. This delegation serves as the diplomatic mission of the European Union to the United States, representing the EU's interests and facilitating diplomatic relations between the EU and the U.S, while fostering cooperation on various issues including trade, security, climate change, and technology. The San Francisco office specifically focuses on engaging with the tech community and fostering innovation partnerships between the EU and Silicon Valley. It serves as a hub for dialogue, collaboration, and exchange of ideas between European and American stakeholders in the tech industry. Additionally, the office works to promote European culture, values, and policies in the region. According to Gerard de Graaf, Head of the European Union office in San Francisco, the European Union is a technology superpower and has paved the way in terms of the following regulations: ♦ The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which ensures important information privacy protection; ♦ The Digital Services Act (DSA), which aims to create a safer digital space where the fundamental rights of users are protected; ♦ The Digital Markets Act (DMA), which aims for fairer and more open digital markets; ♦ The European AI Act, the first-ever legal framework on AI, addresses its risks and positions Europe to play a leading role globally. California has also implemented a law similar to the GDPR called the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), followed by 13 other states that followed California's lead. We call this the "California Effect": when California passes a law, many states follow suit and pass similar laws. California and the European Union are working hand in hand to lead the charge in tech innovation and user protection. Their influence reaches far and wide, showing the power of collaboration between the EU and the US in shaping our digital future.
