Yanung Jamoh Lego, a distinguished herbal medicine expert from Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh, was honored with the Padma Shri award in 2024 for her significant contributions to traditional healing practices. Born in 1963 in Sika Tode village, East Siang district, she has dedicated over three decades to reviving the traditional healing system of the Adi tribe. ARUNACHAL TIMES Under the mentorship of her father, a respected folk healer, Lego pursued education in agriculture at Assam Agricultural University. She began her professional career as an agriculture inspector in 1988 and retired as a deputy director in the state agriculture department in 2023. Her true passion, however, lay in herbal medicine, which she practiced intensively after a 15-year apprenticeship with her father. ARUNACHAL TIMES Throughout her career, Lego has treated over 300,000 patients suffering from life-threatening illnesses such as various types of cancer, diabetes, and hypertension. In 2009, she founded the Indigenous Herbal Heritage organization to promote the cultivation and knowledge of medicinal plants. Through her efforts, more than 100,000 individuals have been educated on the benefits of herbal medicines, and approximately 5,000 medicinal plants are planted annually to ensure sustainability. ARUNACHAL TIMES Lego's dedication has earned her several accolades, including the Arunachal Pradesh State Award in 2019, the SRISTI Samman Award in 2007, and the Paramparika Vaidya Ratna Award in 2013. The Padma Shri award acknowledges her decades of dedication and impact, underscoring the importance of traditional medicine in contemporary health discourse. ARUNACHAL TIMES Upon her return from New Delhi after receiving the award, Lego was warmly received by hundreds of people at the Ruksin gate in East Siang district, including members of the 90s Hero Sporting Club, the Adi Bane Kebang (women), and villagers of Sika Tode. She was also felicitated by local societies at Sika Tode and Pasighat. ARUNACHAL TIMES Governor KT Parnaik congratulated Lego, stating that the award is an honor to indigenous herbal medicine experts whose healing practices are safe, effective, and ethically practiced. He expressed hope that the recognition would contribute to the revival of traditional herbal treatment practices passed down by forebears. ARUNACHAL TIMES
