Every year, more than seven million animals are used for research, testing and education in the EU and around 800,000 of them are subjected to severe pain, suffering or distress. To make matters worse, an estimated 12 million animals are bred and killed for scientific purposes, but never actually used in experiments. But times are changing and the call for a transition to non-animal science is growing louder and louder, with citizens, scientists, academics, member states and EU institutions repeatedly speaking out in favour of this transition. But there is still much to be done. Animals have been used in research and testing for so long that acceptance of new non-animal methods has been slow. We are confident that a new era of humane science can be achieved, but only by effectively incorporating non-animal technologies into policy and practice. And we are working on it.
