I've always wanted to visit the verdant isle of Pico, in the heart of the Azores. Home to Portugal's tallest volcanic peak, this green island is one of the richest Azorean islands in terms of human history, boasting the incredible Pico Vineyard Landscapes UNESCO World Heritage Site. On this island, wine growers have nurtured vines for over 500 years, adapting to the rugged volcanic environment by creating lava stone enclosures to protect the delicate trees from the North Atlantic winds. This rudimentary technology is still used today, producing Portugal's famous Azorean Pico wines, lauded for their quality by wine enthusiasts worldwide. It's not just the wine, though; during my time on the island (my first of two visits on this trip), I spent time exploring the rugged Lava Cliffs of Cachorro, and hiked the rural landscapes of this incredibly green island, all the way to the charming village of Madalena, on the island's west coast. You have not been to Portugal unless you've been to Pico. This is, without a doubt, the most stunning and unique of all the Azorean islands, and it should be placed at the top of anyone's short list if visiting this seldom-visited and low-key archipelago.
