Ecoworks began as a Permaculture based social inclusion and mental health project centred on a few allotment gardens in one of Nottingham's most amazing secrets... The Hungerhill allotments, which are the oldest allotments in the world, and the largest in Europe. That original project, like all of the other projects that have gathered to form what Ecoworks is today, has grown, taken on more gardens and has now ripened into a magnificent example of sustainability deep in the heart of the city. 10 years ago Ecoworks began the FRESH project (standing for Food, Regeneration, Education and Sustainable Harvest) on another bundle of gardens on the same site. FRESH has trained countless folk in horticulture and inspired a generation of allotment gardeners in the city to grow their own food in ways harmonised with nature. This lead to the creation of a veg box scheme which now delivers Fresh seasonal locally grown veg to a growing number of sites around the city, soon to include many busy workplaces. We also grow a range of fruit and veg and boast Nottingham's most amazing mixed leaf salad which draws on the best of about 60 varieties of leaves throughout the year and is supplied to select cafe's and restaurants including the Broadway and Alley Cafe. The box scheme has taken on a life of its own and has led to the development of 'The Nottingham Local Food Network' of local growers who can help supply produce as the number of people choosing to buy locally through the box scheme increases. "We work with most of the environmental and land based projects in the city to harmonise our grow plans and gather Nottingham produce into a consistently tasty affordable package". The box scheme, like all of Ecoworks, is 'not for profit' and surplus income enables Ecoworks to offer discounted veg boxes to folk living in food poverty within the city, whilst also ensuring that as much food as possible food is grown in a way that maximises biodiversity and minimises the damage caused by current models of agricultural production.
