Gary Corben - A McFar Land

No guesses as to the inspo here, the great man himself Gary McFarland. From the first time 30 years when I heard his versions of Beatles songs from a Hard Day's Night done as jazz bossa with scat vocals (Jobim even played guitar on that album) I was hooked. McFarland was the first serious musician to recognise the influence of the Beatles songs and his Beatles, Bossa and Blues style sadly created many inferior imitators that helped consign the records he made in the 60s to the elevator music bin. But McFarland had incredible taste in arrangements. He loved the marimba which he played but also bossa acoustic guitar and trombone. He often used Cuban percussion legends like Armando Peraza and Willie Bobo on his sessions. McFarland was killed in 1973 in NY by a poisoned drink, allegedly during a game of Russian roulette.
