Shillong STREET FOOD Tour of Police Bazaar - Pork, Momos and Chow | Shillong, Meghalaya, India

The thing I love about India the most is how diverse it is. It’s diverse in its people, its cultures, its food, and even its landscapes and geography. Nowhere is that more apparent than in the states of Assam and Meghalaya in northeast India. I spent two weeks exploring the wonders of these states back in March of 2019 and I want to take you along on my adventures. Let’s go explore northeast India! After an insane and jam-packed day that saw me leave from Guwahati in Assam, ride to Shillong in Meghalaya, have breakfast at Iewduh Market, have a Khasi thali for lunch, do some shopping at Police Bazaar, trek up to Shillong Peak, and have an unbelievable haircut and massage experience, my day still wasn’t over! Now it was time for dinner and I had a major hankering for some delicious Shillong street food! My buddy Paul from Travel with Paul took me on a nighttime Indian street food tour of Police Bazaar. There was so much to see and try in this bustling market. Street food isn’t as big here as it is in other parts of India, and can really only be found at night. I was so excited to start! I started with a chicken drumstick, which cost 120 rupees/$1.71 U.S. My boy Paul is allergic to chicken, so he couldn’t have any. It looked so good! It came with onions on it and some chutney on the side. It was a delicious, crispy, and juicy barbecued chicken with lots of amazing smoky flavor! It was really fatty and tasted even better with the chutney. One of the best barbecued chickens I’ve ever had! Then we moved on to some grilled, skewered pork stomach. It’s charred and juicy and really salty. It was almost pure fat, but it was delicious fat! Then I tried it with some chutney and lemon. It was like a different world! It was the most delicious barbecued pork ever! Next, we moved on to Food on Wheels, a food truck that sells both Indian and Chinese food. There, I got some chicken momos with hot sauce, which were still boiling hot. The texture was amazing! The chicken was really moist and felt like it had been pulled. The sauce wasn’t too hot, but was delicious. A plate of six momos cost only 40 rupees/$0.57 U.S. Next was Chow, or Chinese noodles. It contained dry, thin noodles and some chicken. I loved the way the onions were mixed in. But I needed a kick, so I added a green hot sauce that was really spicy and was like a green chili sauce with meat. The dish reminded me of glass noodles from Thailand! Then, on the way back to my Airbnb, we stopped at another food truck for some nasi goreng, which is a traditionally Indonesian fried rice dish. After a ride on Paul’s scooter, we arrived at the Griddle Club. They made me some nasi goreng. The difference between Indonesian nasi goreng and the version here in Shillong is that this version is made with chicken instead of seafood. It came with prawn chips, fresh vegetables on the side, and a fried egg on top. I popped the yolk, mixed into the rice, and dove in! While I was eating, there was a car accident right behind me! The nasi goreng was delicious and had a southeast Asian feel to it. The prawn chips were really nice. They were perfect for scooping up the rice and popping the whole thing in my mouth! I loved the combination of the egg and the rice, and the shrimp paste was out of this world! This was one of my favorite fried rice dishes ever! What an amazing conclusion to an epic day!
