Let me tell you about the Lakeland 50. When I first heard about the event, it sparked the beginnings of an idea. What if... I could run 50 miles! What if... I could run 50 miles across the English Lake District, through lush green valleys, alongside pristine lakes and over the high mountain passes. What an adventure that would be! And so, the seed of an idea was planted. I ran my first 50 in 2016; for me, it was the perfect race. Everything seemed to click into place and I completed it in a time of 11:49:47. I was so pleased to bring it in under the 12-hour mark. Spurred on from that success I entered the Lakeland 100 in 2017, and to cut a long story short, I had my first DNF. It was a big reality check and I learned some hard lessons. That’s a story for another day. Maybe there’s some unfinished business there! After that, I think it’s fair to say I lost my love for running. I entered the 50 again in 2018 and completed it in a time of 14:03:45 but this felt like a half effort. I didn’t do the training and I felt my running was on the decline. I’d just lost the passion for running long distances. Beyond a few local shorter races, that was the last long-distance race I’d enter for 6 years! Fast forward to 2024 and something inside me just felt right. This would the year to start again. To rediscover my passion for running and exploring wild places. What also helped was a good friend persuading me to “just enter the ballot and see if you get a place” - you’ve got nothing to lose!
