Bisan Center for Research and Development presents Bisan Lecture Series Prof. Timothy Brennan (University of Minnesota) Title: Criticism and Corporate Myth: Edward Said and the Media Abstract: Said’s maneuvering within the media was the most skillful and least recognized of his accomplishments. There his literary training came most to the fore and the methods of the humanities showed their unique political powers. He took very seriously studies of corporate mind-management, media indoctrination, and the information industries, often citing the work of Herbert Schiller (“mind managers”), the Austrian economist Fritz Machlup (“information society”), Regis Debray (“mediocracy”) and the propaganda model put forth by Noam Chomsky and Edward Herman. If Covering Islam is usually considered his only sustained critique of the media, in fact he focused on digital fabulation throughout his career in essays, for example, on Walter Lippman, George Orwell, C. Wright Mills and Sean McBride, whose UNESCO report on the “new world information order” was particularly influential. His unifying idea was that U.S. intellectuals no longer commanded the public erudition, metaphysical authority, or aesthetic arbitration they enjoyed everywhere else in the world. By contrast, they had assumed the guise of anonymous technicians in the sciences or of soft news entertainers (Jon Stewart and Laura Ingram rather than Jurgen Habermas or Martha Nussbaum). He was not only a media theorist, of course, but a media celebrity; and he achieved this by creating a persona – that of the unaffiliated conscience, the defiant generalist who spoke not from faction or material interests but in pursuit of “the case.” Knowing a great deal about many unrelated things allowed him to make connections others missed, and the prejudice that the humanities, although high-minded, have no teeth played into his hands. He fashioned a new kind of authority by obliterating the credibility of “specialists.” Biographical Sketch Timothy Brennan’s essays on literature, cultural politics, intellectuals, and imperial culture have appeared in numerous publications, including The Nation, the Times Literary Supplement, New Left Review, Critical Inquiry, and the London Review of Books. He teaches humanities at the University of Minnesota, and is the author most recently of Places of Mind: A Life of Edward Said (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2021) and Borrowed Light, Vol I: Vico, Hegel and the Colonies (Stanford, 2014). He is currently at work on the second volume of Borrowed Light: Imperial Form. في الرّابع والعشرين من أيلول ـــ سبتمبر 2003 توفّي النّاقد الأدبي الكبير والنّاشط الفلسطيني إدوارد سعيد، وتفخر "محاضرات بيسان" بإحياء ذكرى ذلك الحدث الذي يعتبره الكثيرون نهاية حقبة من الفكر النّقدي حول قضيّة حقوق الفلسطينيين، وذلك من خلال محاضرة تيموثي برينّن أستاذ الدّراسات الثّقافيّة والأدب المقارن بجامعة مينيسّوتا؛ وقد كان الأستاذ برينّن أحد طلبة سعيد ونشر منذ وقت قريب كتابا عنوانه " الأراضي المحتلّة مجالا للذّهن : سيرة ذاتيّة فكريّة لإدوارد سعيد" (Places of Mind, Occupied Lands : Edward Said, an Intellectual Biography). يُعدُّ الأسلوب التي كان ينتهجه إدوارد سعيد داخل عالم الإعلام من منجزاته الأكثر مهارة والأقلّ شهرة. هناك يتبدّى تأهيله الأدبيّ في أجلى صُوَرِهِ.، وتبرهن مناهج العلوم الإنسانيّة على تأثيرها السّياسي منقطع النّظير. لقد أخذ إدوارد سعيد على محمل الجدّ الدّراسات حول إدارة الأفكار في المؤسّسة، والتأثير المذهبي عن طريق الإعلام وصناعات الإعلام، مستشهدا في أحيان كثيرة بكتابات هربرت شيللر (مديرو الفكر) وعالم الاقتصاد النّمساوي فريتز ماخلوب (مجتمع المعلومات) وريجيس ديبري (حكم الرّداءة) و"نموذج الدّعاية" كما استنبطه ناعوم شومسكي وإدوارد هرمان. وإذا كان كتابه "التّغطية الإعلاميّة للإسلام" (Covering Islam) أكثر أعماله نقدا للإعلام، فقد تركّز اهتمامه في الواقع، وعلى مدى مساره المهني، على الاختلاق أو الافتراء الرّقمي في دراساته حول والتر ليبمان وجورج أورويل وشارل رايت ميلز وشين ماكبرايد الذي كان لتقريره المرفوع لليونيسكو حول "النّظام المعلوماتي الجديد للعالم" بالغ الأثر. وكان الخيط النّاظم في تلك الأعمال رأيه في أنّ المشتغلين بالفكر في الولايات المتّحدة قد فقدوا التّفوّق في مجال سعة المعرفة العامّة والنّفوذ الميتافيزيقي كما فقدوا موقع الحَكَم في النّزاعات الجمالية وهي مزايا يحظون بها في باقي مناطق العالم. لقد بدوا أقرب إلى تقنيي علوم فاقدي الهويّة أو كمنشّطي تظاهرات معاصرة من أجل الجمهور العريض (إنّهم بذلك أقرب شبها لِجون ستيوارت ولورا إنغرام منهما لِيورغن هابرماس أو مارثا نوسباوم). لا شكّ أنّ إدوارد سعيد لم يكن منظّرا لوسائل الإعلام فحسب، بل كان شخصيّة شهيرة من شخصيّات تلك الوسائل، وقد نجح في ذلك إذ صنع لنفسه شخصيّة الضّمير الّلامنتمي، المتحدّي على نحو عام ومن لا يخدم مصالح فئة أو عشيرة أو تحرّكه المصلحة المادّية، ولكن يدفعه البحث عن "الحالة". وقد سمح له إلمامه الواسع بعناصر كثيرة لا روابط بينها، بإيجاد صلا ت بينها كثيرا ما لا يتفطّن لها الآخرون. وصبّ في صالحه ذلك الحكم المسبق القائل إنّ العلوم الإنسانيّة، رغم ما لها من شرف ومهابة، ليس لها وزن، فشكّل لِنفسه ما يشبه المرجعيّة الجديدة بقضائه تماما على مصداقيّة "الاخنصاصيين".
