Cheerily and Merrily is a renaissance dance (John Playford), which we recorded live when we performed at ‘A Yuletide Pageant’, presented in Nov/Dec 2019 by the Courtly Arts Performers of Victoria. This concert constituted a courtly celebration of dance and music spanning four centuries. The Royal Court today abounds in sophistication. To my mind our courtly dances allow us to maintain our social standing and perhaps engender advancement and patronage from our sovereign! R. They also allow us to outdo our peers. It is common knowledge that a good tailor can ensure that our dress is ‘square’, for wide shoulders, ruffs and slashed sleeves are a certain sign of wealth and power. D. Just so, the pavan’s stately elegance allows even those of modest physical talent to still display their finery and preen themselves before the court. R. But dances such as the Ballo Gelosia provide a different opportunity. They permit us to not only preen like a peacock but to flirt mischievously. D. It has always been my view that a little intrigue on the dance floor must surely spill over into political advancement. R. Or perhaps an opportune marriage. (R & D chuckle.) ……………………………………………………………… D. The essence of Yule cheer lies of course in the pleasures of good company. And what greater pleasure might a court offer – than that of courtship? Many of these dances furnish opportunities for private intimacy thinly veiled by public ritual. R. Partner dances such as Balleto Cesarino or the Contrapasso Nuovo, prescribe the gyres and attractive poses that allow each to best display, closely appraise and enjoy their respective virtues. D. I have always found that a vigorous Courante demands stamina, dexterity and intellect – all factors of great interest when evaluating prospective partners in life or love! R. The branles demonstrate that the good humour of these old rustic dances translates well to the elegant sophistication of the courts of England and the Continent, and John Playford’s dances create the opportunity for modernism sufficient to meet the requirements of the most exacting dancing master.
