This is another nostalgic song that I sang as a kid. In those days you really didn’t have a clue what the words were all about, and it didn’t matter, it was just a good song to sing. I remember singing it on school coach trips and at Brownies. I’ve been looking up the words and nothing is for certain but it seems that the verses mainly have some reference to Biblical and Astrological themes, but these cannot be proven and there are different versions sung which have been altered and changed through the years. These are the words I remembered singing as a child growing up in Yorkshire, except instead of ‘Three, three arrivals’ we used to sing ‘Three, three the rivals!?’ Here are some explanations of the words which I have gone with on this video……( the only one that’s very vague is ‘6 for the six proud walkers?’) 1. God 2. Jesus and John the Baptist (the Lily-white boys because of their purity) 3. Three arrivals - the three Magi 4. Gospel makers (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) 5. Symbols at your door - Pentangles to warn off evil spirits. 6. Six proud walkers (?) 7. Seven stars in the sky - The Plaiedes or Seven Sisters 8. April Rainers - the Hyades star cluster, called the ‘rainy Hyades’ rising with the sun in April, said to bring the rain 9. Nine bright shiners - the sun and eight planets 10. Ten Commandments 11. Eleven who went to Heaven ( the apostles minus Judas?) 12. The twelve Apostles Thank you to Pixabay.com for free use of images. Music, vocals and video by Karen Chalmers, KC Music 2023
