REXBURG—The booming university, enthusiastic Madison High School bobcat fans and long-time locals are some of the main themes you’ll find when entering the small town of Rexburg. The town that’s rich in history and pioneer heritage has evolved over time but has held to tradition throughout the decades and is proud to call itself ‘America’s Family Community.’ Margaret Porter Arnold's family was one of the original families in young Rexburg. The town was founded in 1883 and after her family immigrated from New Zealand, the Porters became one of the towns original families in the early 1900's. Arnold says her father, Arthur Porter Jr. was an integral part in Rexburg's development. He wore many hats in town and served at Ricks Academy (BYU-Idaho) as a language and botany professor. She and her husband Terrel Arnold were both born and raised in Rexburg and have never wanted to leave their quaint surroundings. Porter was also the founder of one of the town’s first newspapers The Rexburg Journal. The paper was a competitor to the already existing Rexburg Standard, which Arnold says was always a friendly competitor that was eventually bought out by the Porters. (Read more on EastIdahoNews.com)
