It has been demonstrated fairly widely that transportation policies have had a major impact on public health. Most notably air pollution from cars and trucks has been documented to have deleterious effects on health with many of the worst areas being low-income communities often populated by people of color. This is no accident. During the heyday of highway building from the 1930s to the 1970s in NYC (the rest of the country about 20 years later) low-income neighborhoods were targeted because housing prices were lower, and the people had a lesser voice. However, transportation policies that integrate goals of improved health, better equity and accessibility for all, have been shown to reduce crashes, pollution and increase physical activity. Join us for a keynote address by alumnus Sam Schwartz '69 as we kick off the new Tow Mentor-in-Residence program at Brooklyn College. Previously New York City's Traffic Commissioner and the Chief Engineer of the NYC Department of Transportation, Mr. Schwartz is President and CEO of Sam Schwartz Engineering (SSE), a firm that specializes in transportation planning and engineering. Mr. Schwartz will discuss how we got here, what we have lost by being a car-centric society and what we can do about it. He will cover hot topics including congestion pricing and autonomous vehicles and how they will affect public health. #Gridlock #GridlockSam ---- Brooklyn College is an innovative liberal arts institution with a history of more than 90 years of academic excellence.
