Game Summary (may have spoilers) ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ The 1968 Detroit Tigers were one of the most dominant and well-balanced teams of their era, capturing the American League pennant and ultimately winning the World Series in a dramatic seven-game showdown against the St. Louis Cardinals. Managed by Mayo Smith, the Tigers finished the regular season with a 103–59 record, leading the league by 12 games and clinching their first AL title since 1945. The season was played during what is often referred to as the "Year of the Pitcher," and Detroit’s ace, Denny McLain, stood out as the most dominant of them all. McLain posted a 31–6 record with a 1.96 ERA, becoming the first—and still only—major league pitcher in the modern era to win 30 games in a season. He was awarded the AL Cy Young and MVP honors for his performance. The Tigers’ lineup also featured key contributions from sluggers like Willie Horton, Bill Freehan, and Norm Cash, while Al Kaline remained a steady presence despite injuries. Smith’s bold decision to move outfielder Mickey Stanley to shortstop for the World Series in order to get all his best bats in the lineup paid off. In the World Series, the Tigers rallied from a 3–1 series deficit, winning Games 5, 6, and 7 behind stellar pitching performances from Mickey Lolich, who threw three complete-game victories, including Game 7 on short rest. The win gave Detroit its first championship in 23 years and helped lift the city’s spirits during a turbulent and tense year in American life.
