Professor Joseph Margulies is a Professor of Law and Government at Cornell University and an attorney who loves to analyze and critique the American criminal justice system’s cruelty and inequality. His research centers on methodologies for maintaining healthy, vibrant, and safe neighborhoods and has written various articles and books, such as “Guantanamo and the Abuse of Presidential Power” and more recently, “Thanks for Everything (Now Get Out)”. In this discussion, Emiliya Akhundova interviews Professor Marguilles about his research regarding the neighborhood Olneyville in Providence, Rhode Island, why he chose to study that area, and how to most effectively improve similar neighborhoods and allow the local population to prosper. Although Professor Marguiles initially began his research by looking at the police system, his studies led him to analyzing all crucial factors that make up a neighborhood, such as education and food. The necessary changes for a low-income neighborhood rely on the principle that the conditions must improve without kicking out the local residents. Professor Marguiles tackles difficult questions about how gentrification affects local residents and discusses reclaiming green spaces, police reform, increasing job opportunities for residents, and creating a neighborhood trust as ways to introduce effective change.
