The Bowen, Broken, Bogie (BBB) catchment, near Collinsville, in North Queensland is a major grazing region facing erosion challenges, with sediment from gullies threatening the Great Barrier Reef. The Landholders Driving Change (LDC) project (2017–2022) tackled this by working with graziers, engineers, and contractors to repair severely eroded gullies. Across 24 sites, over 11km of gullies were treated, stopping around 5,500 tonnes of sediment from reaching the Reef each year. Methods included reshaping gully walls, installing rock chutes, and restoring ground cover—creating stable, productive landscapes. The Gully Maintenance and Monitoring project (2022–2025) tracked performance to inform better designs for future repairs. This work highlights how local knowledge, science, and engineering can combine to improve landscape function and water quality flowing into the Great Barrier Reef lagoon. The Landholders Driving Change (LDC) project and the Gully Maintenance and Monitoring project were funded by the Queensland Government through the Queensland Reef Water Quality Program.
