From the home movie collection of Harold and Norma Jeffery, Goderich. In 1970, the Bluewater Sailing Club was formed. Dr. Michael Watts, who was the first official Commodore, wrote a brief history of the club for the May 3, 1973, edition of the Goderich Signal Star. In the article, he notes in 1970 “two events took place that were to lay the foundation for the surge of local interest in sailing boats”. The first was that three local men, Bert Corbett, George Robertson and Harold Jeffery, decided to build a number of Fireballs, a 16 ft. long racing dingy, to form the nucleus of a club. The sloops were built in the upper part of MacDonald Electric’s building on Britannia Road. The second was that George Robertson opened Huron Marine, a retail outlet for sailboats, namely the popular Abbott 22. (The building that housed the marine supply store is still standing on the north east side of Blyth Road at Sharps Creek Line). Featured in this video are George Robertson, Bert Corbett, Harold Jeffery, Don MacEwan, Jim Mulhern, to name a few.
