INTO THE GUNKS

There have always been places where people feel the most that their bodies can feel. Sacred places. Places of sanctuary. Places where the soul brushes up against the underside of our skin or the backs of our eyes, so close to the surface that we access it in ways we’re seldom allowed to. These places are utterly variable and subjective, but for us, it’s here. Here where orange and white walls jut out of hard earth, and boulders plummet from their faces, pebbled and sharp tears frozen in time. Now, they rest amongst deciduous trees and mountain laurel, playing host to thick beds of moss and crumpled lichen. Seasonally, caravans of amber millipedes travel up and down them, recycling fallen and rotting debris, and finding respite in their shaded overhangs. We’re like them. Here is where our blood flows with intention. Here is where our friendships spread veined roots. Where our love and passion take shape. With bloody fingers, heaving chests, and steady resolves, we surmount and succumb to the blocks. We feel the most ourselves when we feel the most together, when we’re in The Gunks.
