What if the most powerful symbol of our time isn’t a crown or a flag—but the phone in your pocket? This talk traces the evolution of power from medieval thrones to modern parliaments, before revealing how influence today operates quietly through screens, algorithms, and attention. Beginning with a familiar morning habit—reaching for a phone before fully waking—the speaker invites the audience to question who is really making their choices online. Exploring how social media shapes what we see, feel, and believe, the talk exposes attention as the new currency of power, capable of moving markets, shaping identities, and steering societies. Yet this is not a rejection of technology, but a call to awareness. At its heart, the talk challenges us to reclaim agency through critical thinking, conscious sharing, and the courage to question the feed—because in the digital age, power belongs to those who choose how to use it. Briana is a 14-year-old student at Questfield International College. She loves playing volleyball, trying new foods, and travelling to exciting places around the world. Outgoing, sociable, and quick-witted, Briana is always ready for the next adventure! Even though she’s in Year 9, Briana told us she is still figuring out what she wants to be when she grows up — there are just so many amazing possibilities to explore. Her favourite subjects are Biology, Global Perspectives, History, and English, because she enjoys learning about the world, how things work, and how people’s stories shape our future. Outside of school, she loves spending time with friends, discovering new hobbies, and challenging herself to step out of her comfort zone. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
