We decided to put a fire pit in the backyard we started researching various shapes styles sizes and construction materials from pavers to landscaping blocks and settled on concrete block. The firepit is rectangular it is made of 4 inch high 9 inch wide 16-in long concrete blocks, these are not cinder blocks. The soil and sand is compact here so we did compact down the base layer and insured it was perfectly level. You need the first layer to be level as you add additional layers of the concrete block. The rectangular shape fire pit looks really nice at the end of a patio... you may want to put it on top of a patio we elected to put ours at the end. This rectangular fire pit has 3 inches of pea gravel in the bottom and 3 in of lava rock. We will be burning wood in this firepit. The pea gravel and lava rock is just to raise up where the wood will go to burn and if it does rain it'll filter through the lava rock and pea gravel and into the sand. We put a 2" capstone and on top and decided to put porcelain tile with a dark bronze tile edging. We used Fuze It Max by Liquid Nails l, they have construction of fire pits in a article on their website. This is high temperature resistance you really need to have this cure for the full 24 hours as it dries hard. Total cost was right at $200 plus time to construct it ourselves.
