How I 3D Printed a Pinhole Camera

Want to build your own pinhole camera? ↓↓↓ *INTRODUCTION* Recently, I have been learning about cameras, and decided to take on the challenge of making one of my own. This is my most advance project so far! It took a little over a week to make. (My goal is to generally keep these designs to a week long, so I can hit 52 projects by 2025). *MODEL DOWNLOAD AND MATERIALS* Here is the download to this 3D model: https://www.printables.com/model/1207... Photo Paper: https://amzn.to/4iaIogi This photographic paper has worked really well! It is a reasonable size, and held up great. Magnets: https://amzn.to/41sHO89 Used for the magnetic lens cover (and much more); I have used these magnets in every project since I bought them. Hatchbox PLA: https://amzn.to/4kbSrn7 I love Hatchbox filament. Given the choice, it is solely what I use. (However, for this project, I ended up using another random filament that was black). Aluminum Foil: https://amzn.to/3EUK5Ag Do NOT try printing the pinhole... It did not work welll. Aluminum foil worked great however! Prusa MK4 3D Printer: https://amzn.to/4hQsW9B I can't imagine, you're gonna go out of your way to buy a 3D printer for a pinhole camera (don't). You can make a pinhole camera out of almost anything. However, if you are looking for a 3D printer anyways, I recommend a Prusa Printer. (As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases). *A note on the developer and stop solution: Missing from the list above is these chemicals. You will need them. I made my own, and the video I used is in the next section; however, I would recommend just buying the solutions (make sure to handle them with care). The quality of the DIY developer and stop shows... My next improvement will likely be getting an actual developer and stop. *WANT TO MAKE YOUR OWN* I fully support taking up this project on your own! I have learned a lot about cameras and optics through designing this pinhole camera. Below are the resources I used to design my own, and a little about the science behind pinhole cameras: Video Links:    • This is how I shoot pinhole pictures!   This video is from a pinhole enthusiast! It gives a great introduction to pinhole photography, and some of the reasons people enjoy it.    • How To Develop Your Own Pinhole Camera Pho...   This is the video I used to make my developer and stop. Going back I would just buy a developer and stop solution. The solutions here worked for me, but is tedious to make and the images have begun to fade over time.    • #DIY Analogue Paper Negatives Made Easy   I have not used the method in this video yet, but plan to in the future to make photo negatives.    • The Pinhole Camera - Optimal Pinhole Desig...   This video covers some of the mathematics behind pinhole photography. Unfortunately, I found that manufacturing pinhole diameters to an accurate size is difficult, and ultimately the actual dimensions just had to be close-ish to math. *THE SCIENCE BEHIND PINHOLES* Okay, time to open that "pandora's box" - Why does the pinhole project an image? From my understanding - please correct me if I am wrong - as you approach a smaller and smaller pinhole, only the light travelling in a straight line can get inside the box. This stops light from different angles intersecting each other and simply illuminating the inside of box. Instead, distinct points of light enter the box, allowing an image to be formed. What is the FOV? The field of view is determined by the focal length - the distance between the pinhole and the paper. At some "normal" length, the image's FOV will match what you see. Squishing in past this distance will result in a wide FOV. Alternatively, stretching out will zoom the FOV in. The equation for calculating the "normal" focal length that I found was sqrt(paper length * paper height). If you have additional math question please reach out - in the comment or any other method. I would love to help and/or direct you to the resources I used! Why is the image inverted? It has to do with chemistry - which I suck at - but essentially the paper is coated with light reactant chemicals. Placing this in front of the projection created by the pinhole allows these chemicals to react. During this phase the darker parts of the projection react less, and the lighter parts react more. This creates an "invisible" image. To make it visible you bathe the paper in a developer. This solution reacts with the remaining chemical creating dark-spots. However, the parts with the most remaining chemicals are the spots that got the least amount of light, so the image is inverted. There's a clever work around in one of the above videos to create a photo negative. (You can also take a picture with your phone and invert it).
