Churches of Chiloé: architectural wealth in the southernmost part of the world - Chile

The Chiloé archipelago is not only renowned for its magic and charm. Located 1,100 kilometers from Santiago in the southern part of Chile, dozens of islands have become a major tourism circuit thanks, in part, to their beautiful wooden churches dating back as far as the 18th century. In 2001, sixteen of those were recognized by UNESCO as world heritage sites because of their great historic and architectural value. Chiloé, with a surface area of almost 9,000 km2, and similar in size to Puerto Rico or Cyprus, has 60 churches in total, all considered national monuments. These represent the Chiloé School of Religious Architecture in Wood and exhibit the architectural wealth of the southernmost part of the world.
