(25 Feb 2001) Arabic/Eng/Nat XFA Colin Powell arrived in Kuwait late on Sunday on the second day of a six-country trek through the Middle East, as liberation day celebrations continued across the country. The U-S Secretary of State went straight from the airport to talks with Kuwait's deputy prime minister and foreign minister Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah. A main goal of Powell's in his first extensive trip as secretary of state is to try to rally Arab governments to support the continuation of economic sanctions against Iraq. At a press call, Powell reiterated U-S intentions to contain the regime of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, particularly with regard to development of weapons of mass destruction. Powell's visit coincided with the start of two days of celebrations in Kuwait marking the 10th anniversary of the end of the Gulf War, which freed the country from Iraqi occupation. In the desert, a joint U-S-Kuwaiti live fire military exercise was watched by former U-S President George Bush. Traditional prayers preceded the U-S-organised display of military might, which sent a clear signal across the border to Iraq. A spokesman from the Kuwait Liberation Forces said that 10 years on, Kuwait was unmoved by ongoing threats of invasion by Saddam Hussein. Morale was also high among the U-S contingent, according to another spokesman. In Kuwait City on Sunday night, people enjoyed fireworks of a different kind, as colourful displays went off around Kuwait City. Kuwait has not held such festivities before because about 600 of its citizens and nationals of other countries who lived here at the time of the 1990 Iraqi invasion are still missing. Although the missing are still unaccounted for, the government decided to part with tradition this year because liberation day, February 26, falls one day before the 40th anniversary of the country's independence from Britain in 1961. SOUNDBITE: (English) "It was at the top of my agenda to make sure we continue to contain Iraq, that it does not develop the kinds of weapons that it's trying to develop. We have been successful for the last ten years in keeping him from developing those weapons and we will continue to do so." SUPER CAPTION: Colin Powell, US Secretary of State SOUNDBITE: (English) "Well, Saddam Hussein has been threatening us since he's been holding this position, but I assume he's threatening all the countries, it doesn't matter what kind of threat. But I am making sure we are ready for him as a Kuwait army." SUPER CAPTION: Lieutenant Coronel Ahmed Hashem, Kuwait Liberation Forces SOUNDBITE: (English) "The morale of my soldiers is fantastic, it's very high. We've had a great training operation during our deployment here, we have been able to exercise every system within this task force, junior leaders are getting the chance to train their soldiers at the tasks that they think are important, as they relate to our mission here in country."
