The blue bottle is a redox chemical reaction in which methylene blue changes its oxidation state with dextrose (glucose) in basic or alkaline medium. By reduction, the methylene blue, turns into leucomethylene blue, colorless. Shaking the bottle, the oxygen from the air mixes together with the solution and oxidizes the leucomethylene blue into methylene blue, so it turns blue back. Keeping the bottle still, the oxigen goes out so the blue color fades, reducing the methylene blue into leucomethylene blue again.
