The ''fantasia'' by Stefanos Korkolis is inspired by the ''Moldau'',one of a suite of six symphonic poems called ''My Country by Czrch composer Befrich Smetana (1824 - 1884).These works are popular and of great historical importance as they contributed to the foundation of the Czech nationalist school of music. It is quite peculiar that the main theme of "The Moldau'' ,one of the most popural of the six symphonic poems, derivesfrom the Swedish and not from the Czech folk songs! ''The Moldau'' was composed in a period of three weeks in the winter of 1875 andpresented for the first time the following years.Smetana describes the river's course through nature with a unique smoothness. ''The Moldau'' was one of the first classical pieces Stefanos Korkolis ever listened to.He was only 3 years of age when Smetana's music fascinated him.In the summer of 1998,after a concert in the Herodium, the russian conductor Simeon Kogan afet having listened to the pianist impovising on a theme of ''The Molday'',suggested that Stefanos Korkolis should write down his thoughts and compose a work for the orhestra.Naturally,Korkolis accepted with great enthusiasm and ''Fantasia'' was composed in a short period of time.''Fantasia'' consists of two parts. The first is more restless and corresponds to the descriptive parts of the original composition.Unlike the first part, the second one is more lyrical and offers the chance to the composer - pianist to give the music a contemporary poetic dimension. The musical sections succeed each other through various moods, where the romantic melontic of Smatana is released through an interesting dialogue with modern influences.Korkolis develops the melodic potential of the orogonal score into a multitinal, clear work, lightened of dense symphonic elements and free from demanding listening. The dreamy, narrative ambience is strengthanad by an orchestration influenced by the limpid and constantly changing colours of the French school.
