Independent General Surgeon Dr. Steven Siegal often sees patients who have difficulty swallowing. “Whether it's a hard time getting pills down, or chunkier foods like meat or bread, they can have things get stuck in the lower part of the esophagus or up in their neck.” Tests are required to get a proper diagnosis for what’s causing the problem. In the past, that meant a catheter down the nose, through the esophagus, into the stomach while the patient is awake. “Some people really struggle with getting that catheter down, whether it's gag reflex, nose bleeds, deviated septum, and they really kind of cringe at the idea of doing that,” said Dr. Siegal. Lee Health now offers the minimally invasive EndoFLIP technology. “It does do motility testing of the esophagus, but it's done during an endoscopy, so the patient is asleep,” said Dr. Siegal. “They don't have to come and take two trips to the hospital for two separate tests...The major advantage is they don't have to be awake swallowing something or having something go down their nose...And it's very comfortable. In fact, they won't even know it even happened type of procedure.” The test takes about 5 minutes. “When you're done with your endoscopy part, you put this catheter down the mouth, and it goes down the esophagus and into the stomach. And then there's a balloon around a pressure catheter. The balloon inflates inside the esophagus, the esophagus thinks its food and starts to squeeze and digest, and as it squeezes, it starts to give us these numbers that we're looking for,” said Dr. Siegal. Then doctors can come up with an individuated treatment plan based on the patient's needs. You can learn more by searching for gastroenterology on Leehealth.org.
