In 1857, Petrus van Oeckelen enlarged the instrument, adding a pedal division, which resulted in a remarkably wide prospect. After the church in Harlingen was demolished, the organ builder Reil restored the instrument and placed it in Soest, where the instrument replaces a De Koff-organ (1960). Van Gruisen was educated in the workshop of Albertus Hinsz, and thus stands in the Northern organ building tradition that goes back to Schnitger. In his instruments, typical "galant" stops appear, forming a bridge between the 18th and 19th century. This program tries to make this bridge audible, with music by father and son Bach. The organ arrangement of movements 1, 2 and 4 of the Sonata for gamba and harpsichord BWV 1027 (also known as the Sonata for two traversi and b.c., BWV 1039) has been attributed to Bach himself, but probably stems his pupil Johann Peter Kellner (1705-1772). I arranged the third movement myself. Carl Philipp Emanuel made a curious arrangement of the famous chorale "Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ", enlarging the pieces with pre-, inter- and postludes, which mix in a curious way with the divine notes of his father. Mendelssohn's brief Allegro covers a broad emotional palette, and shows his unique craft, combining Romantic pathos with masterful counterpoint. Niels Gade was a Danish composer, conductor and organist, and an intimate friend of Mendelssohn. His elegant piano music can be played on the organ with some effect.
