The World Games are an international multi-sports event sanctioned by the International World Games Association (IWGA), under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). They are usually held every four years, one year after a Summer Olympics, and it lasts over the course of 11 days. By additional context, the event is officially known as "The World Games", spelled with a capital T. It consists of official sports and demonstration sports selected from those not featured in the Olympic Games. At the same time, programs are provided in which the general public can participate, aiming towards the popularization of the respective sports, and exchange between local people and athletes and officials visiting from all over the world. The World Games differs from other multi-sport events such as the Olympics itself, in that host cities are not required to build new venues or facilities for the Games. In addition, the competitors are selected by the sports' international federations, as opposed to by NOCs or national governing bodies. In the most recent editions, between 25 and 30 sports have been included in the "official" programme. Several sports or disciplines that were once included on the programme of The World Games (such as badminton, baseball, rugby sevens, or triathlon) have been discontinued, given that they are now included in the official Olympic programme. 1. 6th - Akita, Japan (2001) 2. 7th - Duisburg, Germany (2005) 3. 8th - Kaohsiung, Taiwan/Chinese Taipei (2009) 4. 9th - Cali, Colombia (2013) 5. 10th - Wrocław, Poland (2017) 6. 11th - Birmingham, Alabama, USA (2022)
