In this video, we'll take a tour of the Il-86 - the first Soviet wide-body airliner and the largest domestically produced civilian aircraft. We'll explore its history, design, and the features that made it so unique. The Il-86 is a wide-body passenger aircraft developed in the USSR by the Ilyushin Design Bureau in the 1970s. The airliner, capable of accommodating up to 350 passengers, became a member of the premier league of civil aviation, which at the time consisted of only a few models: the Boeing 747, Douglas DC-10, Lockheed L-1011, and Airbus A300. Meanwhile, in terms of size, the Il-86 was second only to the 747. The Il-86 was originally designed with rather specific operating conditions of the USSR in mind. It featured robust landing gear and high-lift devices, allowing it to operate on airfields originally designed for lighter aircraft. It also became the pinnacle of the "luggage at hand plus containers" concept, incorporating a number of unusual features for airliners of this class: its own retractable airstairs, compartments for passenger baggage, and inter-deck stairs. This made the Il-86 less demanding than similar foreign airliners, and the travel experience on it quite unique. However, due to the use of conceptually outdated engines, the aircraft was weight-limited, resulting in a reduced range. This effectively made the largest Soviet airliner a medium-haul aircraft and limited its further development. The solution to this problem was the introduction in the 1980s of, albeit a direct successor, but a significantly redesigned aircraft - the Il-96. A total of 106 Il-86 airliners were produced. Commercial service has ended, and several aircraft remain in service with the Russian Aerospace Forces.
