Over the past few years, dozens of Ghanaians have been extradited to the United States with barely a whisper of protest, no long diplomatic standoffs, no claims of jurisdictional complexity, no public hand-wringing about due process, yet when Ghana seeks accountability from its own citizens who are alleged to have committed serious crimes against the Ghanaian state, suddenly the system freezes, excuses multiply, processes become “complicated,” and everyone pretends there is nothing that can be done. Take the case of Ken Ofori-Atta, a former Finance Minister of this Republic, a man who once held enormous power over the public purse, who is presumed innocent, yes, but who is also being actively sought by Ghanaian authorities in relation to serious allegations, and for nearly a year now, he has remained outside the country, living freely in the United States, not arrested, not detained, not even inconvenienced enough for extradition proceedings to properly begin, while the Ghanaian state looks on in a mixture of silence, hesitation, and what increasingly looks like resignation. Or take Sedina Tamakloe, a former public official who has actually been convicted by a Ghanaian court, not accused, not suspected, but convicted, and yet remains outside the jurisdiction, beyond the reach of enforcement, while the Ghanaian state appears unable, or unwilling, to secure her return to serve her sentence, and one has to ask, what exactly does a conviction mean if it cannot be enforced, and what does the authority of our courts amount to if their judgments stop at Kotoka Airport. #joyprime
