A gringo friend and I hike up the very famous Rainbow Mountain, Vinicunca, in Peru. Follow us in this video and see what the Montaña de 7 Colores looks like and how it is to walk up there. When my friend Nicolà and I planned this trip, we had no idea, how exhausting a stroll up Vinikunka (how the local native community calls it) can be. We are still young adults, age 25 and 24 and we are both not the weakest people. Nicolà often goes for hikes in the Swiss Alps and I play hockey on a regular basis. But the hike up to Vinicunca was far from easy. The air just gets so thin that it’s hard to properly breathe and you have no other choice than to slowly walk uphill… Our adventure started at 4 in the morning, when we got up and left out hotel in San Pedro, Peru. After driving to the first and old parking lot, we got stopped at a gate. Nobody was there, but the gate was closed. We asked a nearby farmer, when the gate would open, he said “at 8”. We don’t speak proper Spanish and the farmer didn’t speak any English. We looked onto our watches and saw that it was only just 6am. Are we gonna wait until 8am or should we cross the gate illegally. Nice as we are, we waited until 7.30am, when a guard and ticket salesman showed up on his motorcycle. He was polite to ask us where we are from and how long we’ve been waiting (in Spanish of course). He chuckled when we said how long we’ve been waiting. We then were finally able to enter and made our way to the second parking lot. From there we hiked around one hour to get to the top viewpoint of the Rainbow Mountain, which is at 5036 metres above sea level. It was exhausting like nothing ever before. It was hard to get air, as you can hear in the video. Up there, we were pumped, since adrenaline was rushing through our body from this accomplished challenge. We were the first ones that day to climb up to this viewpoint, which made us super proud. One the way up and down, we came across many cute Alpacas. I first wasn’t sure if those were Llamas or Alpacas, but Nicolà informed me, that they are Alpacas. Still very cute! Some of them gave us some funny stares. Seems like they weren’t prepared for gringo tourists :D On the way down I recorded some more of the beautiful river and the beautiful landscapes.
