Walpurgisnacht, or Walpurgis Night, is called by some second Halloween or spring Halloween as it occurs the night of April 30 to May 1, which is exactly midway between fall Halloweens. Like Halloween, it has its origins in ancient legends and rituals, and legend has it that it’s the night when the veil between this world and the next is the thinnest. And it has some of the same traditions, such as bonfires, costumes, and playing tricks. The Hexentanzplatz (literally “Witches’ Dance Place”) is a plateau high above the Bode Gorge in the Harz mountains, opposite the Roßtrappe in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Supposedly, this is where Walpurgisnacht was observed in ancient times. This Stamp Chat is about postcards, stamps, and postal history related to Walpurgisnacht and the Hexentanzplatz.
