On 29 September 2025, the Saskatoon Police Service held a press conference announcing the identity of this victim as Alice Spence née Burke, born in Michigan in September 1881. In 1904, Alice married Charles Spence. In 1913, she and her husband moved to Sutherland, Saskatchewan with their daughter. The last record of Alice's existence dates to 1 June 1916, when she was recorded in the Canadian census as living with her husband and their daughter. Authorities say Alice disappeared between 1916 and 1918 and noted she was never reported missing or recorded as deceased. In 1918, the Spence family's home burned down without anyone inside. This house was located just a few blocks away from where Alice's body was later found. In the 1921 census, Alice's husband Charles reported that he was still "married" rather than a widower, and he and his daughter by Alice were then recorded as living with a female housekeeper and the housekeeper's son. Charles died of a heart attack in 1923, and his death notice records him as a "widower". Despite considering Alice's death suspicious, police are now treating the case as closed since her identity has been discovered via genetic genealogy. While police have stated they do have a suspect who they believe was responsible for Alice's death, their evidence is only circumstantial and dates to "a hundred years ago", and thus they are choosing to close the case.
