Naxos Greece: The Largest of the Cyclades

Naxos is a Greek island in the South Aegean, the largest of the Cyclades island group. Its fertile landscape spans mountain villages, ancient ruins and long stretches of beach. The namesake capital (also called Hora or Chora) is a port town filled with whitewashed, cube-shaped houses and medieval Venetian mansions. Kastro, a hilltop castle dating to the 13th century, houses an archaeological museum and is build over the ancient acropolis of the polis (city state) of Naxos. At the edge of bourgos the settlement under Kastro the castle there are excavations of the Mycenaean walls of Naxos during the Bronze Age. Panormos in southern Naxos is one of the main centres of the Cycladic civilisation in 4th and 3rd millennium BCE. Stelis(Stelida) excavation found palaeolithic evidences of more than 200.000 years ago and the oldest signs of navigation in the world.
