Your Medication Tretinoin Tretinoin is also known by the brand name: Retin-A. Tretinoin comes in a cream and gel dosage forms. Tretinoin is most commonly used for treating pimples (acne). It can be used to treat wrinkles, skin spots, and skin that feels rough. It may be given to you for other reasons. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist. Standard dosing of tretinoin is the application of the cream/gel once daily. The best way to use Tretinoin: • Do not take this drug by mouth. Use on the skin only. Keep out of your mouth, nose, and eyes (may burn). • Follow how to use as you have been told by the doctor or read the package insert. • Put on at bedtime • Wash your hands before and after applying • Clean affected area part of skin before use. Make sure it dries well before applying cream/gel. • Put a thin layer on the affected area of skin and rub in gently. • Gel – this drug may catch on fire. Do not use near an open flame or while smoking. Some side effects with tretinoin include burning sensation of the skin, skin irritation, and itching. When taking tretinoin, remember it is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have: • Signs of an allergic reaction, like rash, hives, itching, blistered, or peeling skin with or without fever • Very bad skin irritation • Skin swelling If you miss a dose of Tretinoin: • Skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time • Do not put on 2 doses or extra doses The best way to store Tretinoin: • Store at room temperature. • Store in a dry place. Do not store in a bathroom or refrigerator. • Keep all drugs in a safe place.
