(7 Aug 1995) T/I 10:10:19 STORY: CLINTON LOCATION: WASHINGTON DC, USA DATE: 4 AUGUST 1995 DURATION: 1.24 President defends Croats but warns of "wider war" US President Bill Clinton in Washington on Friday (4/8) defended the Croatian offensive on the Serb-held enclave of Krajina but cautioned the Croats against the risks of a wider war. "The Croatian offensive was originally launched in response to Serb attacks on Bihac, one of the protected areas (of Bosnia), and it apparently has largely relieved a lot of pressure on Bihac," he said. "But because it is so comprehensive it runs the risk of a wider war. And that is what we have cautioned against in our contacts with the Croats," added Clinton at a White House briefing. Clinton was speaking in the Oval Office as the Croatian army was bearing down on Knin, the Serb stronghold in the Krajina enclave, which borders Bosnia and the embattled Bihac pocket. "We have asked them to exercise real restraint because we are concerned about a wider war," Clinton said. US officials have said the war could spread if Serbia entered the fighting against Croatia, although a White House spokesman had earlier said that there was no indication of that happening.
